When making the choice between living with obesity and undergoing medical or surgical treatment, most patients cite one barrier to case: the cost of treatment. With economic concerns facing the majority of the country, obesity treatment often seems like a “luxury” to a large number of people.

While you’re considering the actual cost of treatment, it’s important to look at another reality: the comparatively higher costs of obesity and obesity-related complications. Health care costs, including out-of-pocket expenses, for managing diabetes are 2.3 times higher than for a patient without diabetes and medications for high blood pressure can cost patients more on average than the out-of-pocket cost for obesity treatment.

Of course, the greatest benefit of obesity treatment cannot be measured in dollars. It’s the increased quality – and quantity – of your life.

Medically Supervised Weight Loss

Medically supervised weight loss is the safest, most cost-effective nonsurgical treatment for obesity available. Unlike other diet programs, the Bon Secours Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program provides patients with the nutrition education, ongoing health support or medical supervision required for lasting weight loss.

Our program requires monthly physician visits, which are billed to your insurance. If you’re interested in participating in this program, we recommend that you contact your insurance company before scheduling an orientation to confirm if insurance will cover obesity-related physician visits. The cost of the food is typically $75 a week and is not covered by insurance.

We offer patients without insurance coverage for medical weight management the option of a self-pay package. Please contact us at 757.673.5990 for more information.

Gastric Balloon

The ORBERA™ Intragastric Balloon System is a nonsurgical option for individuals who need help losing weight and have a body mass index of 30 to 40.

Patients lose weight with the help of an inflated gastric balloon that stays in place for six months to help them control portion sizes and calorie consumption. Additionally, patients learn how to make healthy eating choices and incorporate exercise into their lifestyle through a 12-month coaching program.

Although the balloon procedure is not covered by insurance plans, Bon Secours Weight Loss Institute has developed a self-pay fee of $6,515. Some of the package services include: an initial consultation, lab testing, follow-up visits, nutritional counseling and the cost to place and remove the balloon.

The self-pay package does not include several services that may be needed or required. The full balance of the package must be paid two weeks prior to the procedure’s scheduled date.

If you are a candidate for weight loss surgery, The Bon Secours Surgical Weight Loss Center has insurance analysts who will assist you with your documentation submission and will follow up regularly on approval requests with your provider. Our experts know that obesity treatment is a medical necessity, not a cosmetic procedure – and this treatment also saves your health insurance provider money in the long run.
